CP3 (Cross-Continental Connections)

Cross-Continental Connections (C to Power 3: CP3) is a collaborative effort engineered by DocA in collaboration with members of the Africa Real Collective and well-known global organizations aimed at promoting knowledge building and sharing within the documentary industry. Our goal is to bring together industry professionals, emerging talents, and content creators from across Africa, providing them with a platform to connect, collaborate and learn from one another.

The CP3 Sessions will consist of a series of virtual sessions featuring key industry players, experts, and influencers. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics including storytelling, production, funding, distribution, marketing, and impact. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with speakers, ask questions, and share their own experiences and insights.

Our aim is to create a vibrant and inclusive community of documentary professionals and enthusiasts, one that encourages innovation, diversity, and excellence. By bridging the gap between the industry and content creators, we hope to foster a culture of collaboration and mutual support one that celebrates the power of documentary storytelling to inspire, inform and transform.

The collaboration with these organisations brings in additional expertise and resources, enhancing the value of these sessions for all involved. While the sessions are open to all interested participants, our primary focus is on providing this opportunity to our beneficiaries.

We believe that supporting emerging talents from Africa is crucial in repairing the fractures between content creators and industry professionals.

CP3 (Cross-Continental Connections) IDFA Meet & Greet

Overview:

The Africa Real Collective (ARC) and the Documentary Association of Europe (DAE) in association with the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) present the CP3 (Cross-Continental Connections) IDFA Meet & Greet an event designed as a semi-formal gathering of both the respective organisations’ representatives and delegations attending this year’s edition of the festival, as well as partner organisations and interested parties.

This meet and greet will be characterized by a relaxed meet-up wherein attendees freely interact with each other and is interspersed with huddles where various Delegate-Rep groups will discuss one of the Key Discussion Topics, outlined below. There will be facilitators to steer the discussions and animate the event.

Objective:

The meet and greet aims to foster a meaningful connection between the various delegations and the organisations supporting the documentary eco-system, leveraging previous thematic questions as conversation starters. This event seeks to enrich the experience of both groups at IDFA by facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration.

We encourage members of the participating delegations to deepen their engagement with the various organisations in their respective regions of operations. This collaboration can lead to enhanced networking opportunities and collective support between the African and International documentary filmmaking community.

Outcome:

In the short term, we hope you will find partners at the Meet & Greet with whom you share values and similar attitudes towards collaboration. Our long-term goal is to find a way to better monitor and evaluate the ethical dimensions of co-productions. We see this as the responsibility of organisations and institutions in the first steps, but we cannot do it without the input and feeback from filmmakers, artists, producers and creatives making the work.

Theme: Ethical Co-production and Power Rebalancing in Global Cinema

This theme will explore the complexities of ethical co-production between filmmakers from different regions, emphasizing the need for fairness, transparency, and balanced power dynamics, especially between Global North and South partners.

    • Discussion Focus: Addressing the historical power imbalances in co-productions between the Global North and South, focusing on rebalancing power, representation, and creative control. What steps can be taken to ensure that Southern partners are not marginalized?
    • Key Question: How can we redefine and redistribute power to create equitable partnerships between Global North and South filmmakers?
  1. Continuing the Conversation on Ethical Co-production
    • Discussion Focus: Ongoing discussions about co-production practices that emphasize fair representation, transparency, and equal participation between partners from different regions, particularly between the Global North and South. How can ethical co-production be prioritized across international collaborations?
    • Key Question: How can we create lasting dialogues around ethical practices in co-productions?
  1. Established Documentary Organizations’ Role in the Global Co-production Conversation
    • Discussion Focus: Exploring how established documentary organizations and industry platforms approach and potentially influence conversations around ethical co-productions. Is there a need for stronger guidelines, or does the current structure provide enough support?
    • Key Question: What responsibility do established documentary organizations have in shaping ethical co-production standards?
  1. What Happens After the Meet & Greet?
    • Discussion Focus: Post-networking events, what are the next steps for filmmakers and producers to ensure that ethical standards agreed upon in initial meetings are upheld throughout the production process? This will also explore accountability mechanisms.
    • Key Question: How can we ensure that ethical agreements made during initial stages are maintained throughout the entire co-production process?
