📢 RCLA Call for Submissions 📢
Rough Cut Lab Africa is back for our 6th edition with a special focus this year on Lusophone Africa, the PALOP countries.
In striving to connect filmmakers on the continent beyond land and borders our biggest obstacle remains the barrier of language. In striving to build our networks of comradeship and family, this year’s RCLA is hosted in Maputo, Mozambique, and is open to submissions from all over the continent with precedence for this year’s edition to the Portuguese speaking countries of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe.
RCLA supports filmmakers’ struggles in the rough cut editing phase of story telling. With targeted consultation and detailed discussions around story construction, obstacles, unforeseen problems and possible ways forward, our world class African consultants from all spheres of the filmmaking process avail themselves to your stories for your consideration towards your vision.
Through our rigorous submissions process 9 African long-form independent documentary projects will be selected where both director and editor are invited to allow the RCLA into their worlds. We do not intend or expect to finish your films but to help them overcome story issues towards finishing.
If either the director or editor are of African decent you are invited to submit to our virtual lab that takes place between the 8th and 22nd of June 2024 for a series of guided consultation sessions.
The call is open and the deadline for submissions is on or before 4pm (SAT), Friday 05th April.
All projects must meet the following criteria:
- Project Title
- Country
- Name and nationality of Director. Director’s contact details (email & phone)
- Name and nationality of Editor. Editor’s contact details (email & phone)
- Films need to be independent and 60 mins or above.
- One-page synopsis.
- Online screener link and password to the viewable rough cut.
- One page each from the director and editor outlining the difficulties currently experienced with the film’s current structure and / or problematic areas in the story.
No esforço que fazemos em ligar cineastas no continente, para além-fronteiras, o nosso maior obstáculo continua a ser a barreira da língua. No sentido de construir as nossas redes de camaradagem e família, este ano o RCLA estará sediado em Maputo, Moçambique, e está aberto a inscrições de todo o continente, dando prioridade especial a filmes procedentes de Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné- Bissau, Moçambique e São Tomé e Príncipe.
RCLA apoia cineastas na fase de edição preliminar, aka rough cut edit. Com consultas bem direcionadas e discussões detalhadas sobre a construção de narrativas, obstáculos, problemas imprevistos e possíveis caminhos a seguir, os nossos consultores, especializados nas variadas esferas do processo de produção cinematográfica, disponibilizam-se a pensar nas vossas narrativas de forma a alcançar as vossas visões.
Através do nosso rigoroso processo de submissão, serão selecionados nove documentários independentes africanos de longa duração, onde o diretor e o editor serão convidados a permitir que o RCLA entre e navegue os seus mundos. Não pretendemos nem esperamos terminar os vossos filmes, mas sim ajudar a superar dificuldades e facilitar o rumo à sua finalização.
Diretores e/ou editores de ascendência africana estão convidados a inscreverem-se no nosso laboratório virtual, que acontecerá entre 8 e 22 de junho de 2024, onde beneficiarão duma série de sessões de consulta ao processo de edição e de construção de narrativas.
A chamada está aberta e o prazo para submissões é até às 16h, sexta-feira, 5 de abril de 2024. Todos os projetos devem atender aos seguintes critérios:
- Nome e nacionalidade do Diretor. E-mail e telefone do Diretor
- Nome e nacionalidade do Editor. E-mail e telefone do Editor
- Os filmes precisam de ser independentes e de ter duração mínima de 60 minutos
- Sinopse de uma página
- Link e senha do screener on-line da edição preliminar
- Uma página escrita pelo diretor e outra pelo editor descrevendo as atuais dificuldades.
- Estrutura atual da narrativa e/ou áreas problemáticas.

Calling all Kenyan filmmakers!
FOLLOW THE LEADER is a chance for filmmakers to amplify the voices of inspiring leaders by making short, cinematic films about them.
We’re on the lookout for:
4 fresh short documentary ideas
3 short films in progress
Completed films
Seize the opportunity with grants of up to Ksh 2.1M for new projects, Ksh 725,000 for works in progress, and screening fees for completed films.
Show us the power of civic engagement and participation, while highlighting uncommon, dynamic leaders and be part of fostering inclusive leadership among Kenya’s youth, women, minorities, and marginalized communities.
Please note that we’re not interested in films about the kinds of leaders we see on the news each day, but seek portraits of real changemakers, forging new paths in new ways. All films will be showcased at impact screenings nationwide in a year from now.
